Council hosts information sessions for rural recyclers

Auckland Council’s Waste Solutions team will be on hand to answer questions and work through issues people may have about the new recycling service at two drop-in sessions in Wellsford and Snells Beach.

Following the distribution of the new 240L recycling bins, residents in rural areas have given feedback on bin size, and difficulties with long driveways.

“We are keen to work together with residents and communities to find solutions to these issues,” says Parul Sood, Manager Waste Planning.

“We are already working directly with individual residents about their individual circumstances, to come up with solutions to make this service work for them,

“The drop-in sessions are an opportunity for us to meet and hear from people face to face and find out more about their concerns.”

Residents can call in to the drop-in session at any time on:
· Monday 23 May, 10am-12pm at Wellsford Community Centre, Wellsford
· Wednesday 25 May 10am -12pm at Mauhurangi East Community Centre, Snells Beach.

The new recycling service launches in July.

More than 210,000 households in the former Rodney, North Shore and Waitākere city councils areas are set to receive new 240L bins between 4 April and 30 June, bringing residents in these areas in line with most other Auckland households, which already have 240L bins.

The new bins will replace crates in the former Rodney district, and smaller 140L bins in North Shore and Waitākere. With greater capacity for more recyclable items, cardboard and paper no longer need to be separated – they can all go in the new bin. Separate collections for these items will cease at the end of June.

As well as paper and cardboard, fruit and juice cartons such as Tetrapaks ® will also go in the bins, along with other recyclables including glass and plastic containers and bottles and aluminium cans. Collections will be fortnightly.
