Ahuroa Rd Sealing – consultation (urgent)

A follow up message from Glen Ashton:

The Consultation period closes TODAY.

Important – part of Ahuroa Road new seal looks like a one-lane section

I was emailed this letter that has gone to a few of the residents on Ahuroa Road.

There is more detail and a drawing … and consultation closes today on 20th May!

The section that will be one-lane is on the Ahuroa downhill side where there is a slip into the bush … seems they do not want to spend the money on benching and retaining?

Proposed design

So if you feel similarly and haven’t already done so email the AT address at [email protected], and our Local Board member Beth Houlbrooke [email protected] and tell them what you think of the idea.

Ahuroa Road Sealing translating into a sections of single lane road

Hi

Residents on Ahuroa Road recently got a consultation document from Auckland Transport concerning a proposed section of 1-lane roading being established on the Ahuroa Road hill section.

Some may have thought, as I initially did, that the consultation was about interim 1-lane arrangements during construction. However on re-reading the document I reckon it is intended to be permanent.

Having lived on Ahuroa Road since 1994, seeing the traffic volumes rising especially over the last 8-10 years, seen the sealing programme stall for around 12 years, and now hearing from AT that they would like to make part of our road 1-way to say I’m irritated is putting it very politely. Especially as the reason given on the letter is to “avoid excessive cost”. Absolutely nothing said about the expected impact on road users.

One can’t but feel that lurking feeling of rural communities coming off second-best at the hands of AT under the supercity, especially given Ahuroa Road is so busy now.

The Consultation period closes on the 20th ie this Wednesday. So if you feel similarly and haven’t already done so email the AT address at [email protected], and our Local Board member Beth Houlbrooke [email protected] and tell them what you think of the idea.

Ahuroa Rd – updates from AT.

The design phase is progressing well and is planned for completion by December 2019. This will be followed by the procurement phase and construction starting in early 2020.

  • With regard to landowners’ comments that no approaches have been made for property acquisitions, they are still completing preparatory works before contacting landowners. The design being progressed involves sealing the current road alignment, so any new land requirements will be minimised.
  • At this stage, the first section proposed for construction (referred to as Stage 2) is the section with chainage starting at 5,875m through to 10,075m as measured from West Coast Road.
  • The timing of construction of the Stage 1 section, chainage 850m to 5,875m,will be dependent on budget availability.
  • Communication with the local board and the local community will be undertaken as the project approaches the construction phase and once a contract has been awarded. Prior to works commencing there will be specific communications around the construction methodology, timing etc., all with the aim of minimising disruption.

Request from AKL Council member Beth Houlbrooke

I wonder if you can put out a message in the Grapevine for a community contact – one person only – who would like to be the liaison for the Ahuroa community with Auckland Transport to receive and communicate updates on the sealing of Ahuroa Road.

This person will require good communication skills, be active in the community, be analytical and level headed, with a desire to work positively with the local board representative and AT project manager.

Alternatively, the school or another community group can put forward a name.

They can apply to me at [email protected]

Thanks, Beth

Message from the GrapeVine admin (Chris):

Please apply to Beth directly. If you’re interested in being this person, or nominating an individual, then please send Beth a note. – Thanks.

Clarification on queries regarding Ahuroa Rd follows.

‘Design and consenting’ is progressing for the proposed full 8km length of sealing work on Ahuroa Rd. The initial design had been focussed on what was referred to as Stage 1, chainage (from West Coast Road) = 850m to 5,875m, being the flatter western portion.

Learnings from this have informed the design approach for the remaining eastern hilly section referred to as stage 2, chainage (from West Coast Road) = 5,875m to 10,075m which is currently at the design phase.

Construction is proposed for the 19/20 and the 20/21 financial years (FY) as per the programme below, with the Stage 2 section planned to be constructed first due to its relatively poorer condition. The timing of construction of the Stage 1 section will be dependent on budget availability.

Although the 19/20 financial year is only 2 months away, construction is planned to commence in the latter half of the 19/20 FY i.e during the Jan- May 2020 construction window.
